1 – invest in an SEO session to create and distribute a press release for your company
2 – decide what are you want to target and invest on SEO sessions (pay as you go) to produce content to target those areas

How to get started:

1 – press release
At the very least I would suggest investing in 1 SEO session to get some links to your website. If you’ve done no marketing up to now, there are no important websites linking back to yours, so your website has no authority (ranking power) in Google.
Your first couple of sessions should consist of a press release and include some article marketing.

All the above will produce good quality links back to your website, helping you create a little authority.

What this means
When somebody searches for what you offer, Google generally shows those websites with the most authority first in the results.

Generally speaking, authority is built up on hundreds of links, not just a few, but nonetheless, a few is better than none.

The second thing having a few links back to your site will do is encourage Google to index your website more often (to take your site more seriously, if you like) which is also believed to be a ranking factor.

2 – SEO

If your goal is to get new clients from your website, then you need to market your website in order for prospects to find you in the first place.

If this is the case, you need a strategy. The simplest and most effective way to approach this is to invest in a series of SEO sessions to target the areas you want to mine for new business.

I’ve tailored my services to work on a pay as you go basis, which means you can invest on some SEO sessions to cover the areas most important to you, then pause your SEO campaign and measure results, then resume and pause as and when you please.

Ultimately, your SEO should pay for itself and create profit for you. Once your page ranks well in Google for a keyphrase that you’re targeting, it generally stays in the results for some time (as long as your competitions aren’t busy working on their SEO for the same phrase of course). This means that – often times – a single SEO session for a low competition term can get your page up to the top of the results and keep it there for months to come (and sometimes beyond that) thus creating the potential for many sales over and over again. It’s a smart investment compared to a newspaper advertisement that will cost you in the region of £75 for a single week, on a medium that is not making your sales message appear in front of targeted prospects.

Market analysis
The one thing you will need before you create content (articles) to target specific areas, is market research. This consists of keyword research and competitive analysis.

This is what shows you how many people are searching for your keywords, and helps you determine which keyphrases to optmise for.

If you offer policy writing for companies, but nobody is searching for that term, you’d be better targeting corporate legal document writing instead if that’s what your target audience is searching for.

A keyword research will show you who’s searching for what.

That should get you started with your online marketing.

Generally this happens after a website has been updated. The thing to understand here is that what you see in a sear engine’s results are not ‘live’ results.

Google don’t make public when they update their own database. It’s generally (usually) every few days.

Generally, most companies use the best testimonials they have as part of their persuasive sales message. The problem is that  the testimonials don’t always reflect the average user experience.

For instance, if you searched online before today for a course in Internet Marketing, you’d have come across dozens of sites with glowing testimonials and claims based on people who took the course and became very wealthy as a result.

And there it is: those results are not typical. It’s usually the case that 99% of the other buyers didn’t become rich, and many of those didn’t even recoup their investment.

The Federal Trade Commission has decided that this is misleading advertising, and no longer is a small disclaimer that states ‘these results are not typical’ good enough.

You now need (legally) to make it very clear what it is that you’re selling, and the testimonials you use must illustrate the average experience.

Failure to do so can result in a fine of around $11,000

There are also additional guides that state that you must show your trading address in your contact page, as well as have a terms and conditions page with your trading address (again) and so on.

I’m not yet familiar with the whole ruling, but the gist of it is not to create what could be viewed as misleading advertising by showing only the extremely positive testimonials – if these don’t show the average user experience.

That’s my take on it.

If your customers are extremely happy with your products or services and they all give you glowing testimonials, then that shows the average user experience so you should be fine (that’s my take also, not the FTCs).

The bottom line: use the testimonials that show the average user experience and don’t hide your contact information.

However, getting targeted visitors to your webpage takes effort and a solid strategy.

If you’re starting out with your marketing, then getting visitors to your website is a start. If the ‘numbers game’ theory applies to you, then driving visitors to your website will eventually result in a sale.

Wanting to be number 1 in Google is no different to wanting to be number 1 at anything else. You’re going to have to do whatever ‘number 1′ is doing in order to be able to compete with number 1.

If you want to beat number 1, you’re going to have to do whatever they’re doing, better.

And even then, search engines get to decide who ranks at number one – not website owners.

The algorithm search engines use to rank websites in their index is not public.

Nobody knows exactly what the criterion is.

Moreover, search engines are constantly updating their algorithms in order to

• provide better results
• stop website owners from attempting to manipulate their position in the results

The rules are always changing.

Thus, there are no guarantees in SEO.

Or rather, there is only one guarantee in SEO: if you don’t do SEO you won’t be ranking in a competitive market.

All we can do as SEOs is aim for the top.

There are a lot of SEO companies out there claiming that they can guarantee a number 1 position in Google. This is nonsense. Google’s own Terms of Service state that they cannot guarantee the position of a website.

If Google can’t guarantee it, then nobody can. It’s that simple. Don’t compromise the potential business and income your website can earn you by handing your marketing over to the wrong SEO.

The simple answer to this question is that you can’t. Each search engine has a different set of criteria for your web pages to meet, so you can’t get number 1 organic rankings in every search engine with the same web page.

Think of it as this: imagine that search engines are people. Eeach search engine (person) has a different set of values – they all see and judge the world and those around them according to their own values.

So, some people will like you, and some won’t. Some will tolerate you, and some won’t.

You can change your behaviours to improve your relationship with one person, but doing so will upset your relationship with another person.

Put simply: you can’t please everybody.

Having said this, you can change the way you act accordingly to get on the good side of each person. In the search engine world this would be the equivalent of creating various webpages that each target a specific search engine.

Whilst this is do-able, it can be a lot of work, just like managing your personlity according to who you’re with can become too much of an effort.

A smarter thing to do – at least in the short term – is to focus on the search engine that is going to bring you the most benefit first, then, when you’re ranking well in that search engine, target the next most popular search engine, and so on.

Right now Google own the biggest share of the Internet, followed by Yahoo, so most people optimise their websites to rank well in google.

Conclusion: optimise your website for google AND consider whether to optimise for Yahoo and MSN (Bing) by looking at your effort in terms of  how competitive each keyword or phrase is in each search engine and how much effort it’s likely to take.
