How to get your website ‘to the top’

If you want your website to rank high (preferably in the top 5) then you need to market your website on the Internet. How much effort you have to put into your optimisation and marketing depends on how competitive the keword or keyphrase you’re targeting is. If the top ten websites in your target market are actively engaged in search engine marketing, then you’re going to have to at the very least match their effort to be able to compete against them in the same space.

It’s worth noting that generally, the more competitive the space is, the bigger the return on your SEO investment. For instance, a huge marketing effort, time and expense is required to rank in the top 5 for the search phrase Ferraris for sale. However, a website ranking in the top 5 for a competitive search term can generally expect hundreds if not thousands of visitors per day. In this example, a website ranking in the top 5 for Ferraris for sale has the potential to earn thousands of pounds with each visit!

So how do you get started when it comes to making your website rank high in the search engines?

The following is a list of my services in a step by step format to help you prepare your website in oder to rank high for your target keyphrase.

Step 2: Find out the best keyphrases to target in your market (the easiest most valuable keywords)

  1. What are your ideal customers searching for?
  2. Is your website ranking for those phrases?

Keyword analysis: A keyword analysis will help you uncover the most valuable search phrases in your target market and much more. You must do a keyword analysis to research your market in order to target the best keyphrases or you may well be wasting your time and money on keywords that have little commercial intent or no value.

Step 4: Optimise your website’s structure

Now you need to optimise your website to make it more search engine friendly.

* If you have one of my websites, you already have your base optimisation covered. This is usually enough to rank well in markets with little competition.

However, in order to attain top rankings in more competitive markets you need to ensure that your website’s structure is very well optimised to enable search engines to ‘crawl’ your website without issues.

If you have one of my websites or blogs:

Let me unleash the power of your site by optimising the structure in order to maximise your content’s reach.

If you don’t have one of my websites or blogs:

Let me analyse your website and I will produce your own Step by Step Optimisation checklist that you can pass on to your webdesigner.

Step 5: Optimise your website’s content

Your on-page optimisation can make the difference between a page 1 ranking and a page 100 ranking.

Your content must support the keyphrases you’re targetting. If your website has 1 image and 2 sentences, don’t expect a top ranking.

Search engines are businesses staffed with real people. They need to generate money in order to survive as a business. Their job is to provide the best results available to the searcher. This keeps the searchers happy and coming back – and potentially clicking on advertsisements which generate much of the search engine’s income.

If you searched a search engine for the products or services that you’re offering and the results consisted of 2 or 3 page websites with no information in them and 1 or 2 pictures… you’d start using a different search engine…

So ask yourself truthfully: if you were a search engine, would you pick your website to rank at the top of your market?

Link building servicesStep 6: Get some links

Links are generally counted as ‘votes’. Technically, the more links you have the better it is for your website.

Beware of low value links that can actually harm your website’s ranking.

When aquiring links, be aware that not every link is equal. Some are good, some are neutral and some are bad. your webdesigner.
