A common misconception is that a link is a link, and therefore all links are equal. Whilst this was true in the early days of search engine marketing, this is not the case today when it comes to ranking in the major search engines.

Every so often I get an e-mail from a client asking me to please add a link on the website pointing to somebody else’s website with whom they have just agreed to exchange a link.

This is what is known as a link exchange.

And this is were the value of the link comes into question. Years ago, and the more links you could point to your site and the better it was for your ranking generally. These days however it’s not about quantity but rather quality when it comes to the major search engines, in particularly google.

In a nutshell:

all links are not equal

some are better than others

some links may actually harm your rankings by affecting your site adversely
