I often get asked why the data that Google displays for a website in its search results is ‘wrong’ or not the same as the data on the website.

Generally this happens after a website has been updated. The thing to understand here is that what you see in a sear engine’s results are not ‘live’ results.

Google don’t make public when they update their own database. It’s generally (usually) every few days.

If this issue is happening to you, the data you’re seeing displayed in the search results is the data Google collected about your website at some point before you updated your website.

To quickly check how many of your pages are in Google’s index, use the ‘site’ operator in the following search:

site:yourDomanName.co.uk (or whatever your extension is).

This will show you what Google knows about your website and will likely give you an indication of whether Google has ‘visited’ since or after you updated your website.

When will Google update their search results, and my listing?

When Google decide to update your listing is entirely up to Google.

You have 2 options:

1. Engage in online marketing (e.g. send out a few press releases and get a few links back to your website). This will encourage Google to crawl your website more often, which will highly likely result in faster response times when it comes to updating your data.

2. The second option is to wait. Your listing may be updated soon enough – or not – (of course, this is entirely up to Google).
